A collection of Ferrari-inspired original artworks created by International rock star and musician Chris Rea, best known for hit songs such as ‘Fool, If You Think Its Over’, ‘Driving Home for Christmas’, ‘On the Beach’, ‘The Road to Hell’ and ‘Let’s Dance’ to name a few, are being offered at auction by Anglia Car Auctions (ACA).
The 68 dramatic pieces, offered on instruction of Chris Rea, are part of a unique collection entitled ‘La Passione’, themed around Ferrari with the rampant horse being present.
This is ‘once in a lifetime’ chance to buy this one-off collection from a global rockstar as only one other collection has been released by Chris Rea. The Hofner Blue collection was purchased a few years ago by a private individual for an undisclosed amount.
Having sold over 30 million albums worldwide, Rea is a passionate motorsport enthusiast. His Italian-born father, who owned an ice cream factory in Middlesbrough, took him to see Grand Prix races at Monza and follow the Mille Miglia, where Rea witnessed Sir Stirling Moss winning the world’s most gruelling road race in 1955.
These images of heroic deeds have stayed with Rea throughout his life, eventually materialising in his 1996 film ‘La Passione’, which centred on a young boy’s fascination about his idol, the charismatic Grand Prix driver Wolfgang Von Tripps, who was killed in his sharknose Ferrari 156 at the Monza Grand Prix in 1961.
Following on from the film, Rea turned to the medium of painting as an expression of his passion for motorsport. That passion, ignited by his ancestral roots in Italy, naturally drew Chris towards the world’s most iconic motoring marque: Ferrari.
Rea’s knowledge of the Maranello marque is already well-established and highly respected, both through his collection of race cars and his prowess as a racer in historic events.
However, it is the quest to realise his vision of this iconic marque through his art that has fulfilled Rea’s passion with this collection of paintings that are profound and invite you into a dark world that is full of deep colour, history and strong emotion.
Using paints and pigments acquired in Florence, Rea applies these to board and canvas, often using found material to layer and build the surface. In the great majority of these works, the artwork is purposely sealed with a multi-layered glaze or encapsulated in a heavy framework.
The ‘La Passione’ collection will be available to be viewed at ACA in King’s Lynn by appointment or at the classic car viewing days of Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th November.
The sale will take place on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th November.
