Bentley Continental GT Mulliner Convertible gets St Tropez debut

The new Bentley Continental GT Mulliner Convertible will make its global debut at Cheval Blanc in St Tropez as part of a European Tour hosted by Bentley. This is the first member of the new Collections ‘portfolio’ introduced by Bentley Mulliner.

Should you discover that the regular Bentley Continental GT Convertible isn’t quite, well, luxurious or exclusive enough then help is at hand. Described by the company as the ‘luxury pinnacle of the Continental GT family’, the Bentley Continental GT Mulliner Convertible has been created by the team at Bentley Mulliner and it’s really rather special indeed.

Just for the sake of completeness we should mention that it’s available with the same choice of V8 or W12 powertrains as the regular Convertible, but that’s not really the important thing about this car. The real news concerns the sheer level of craftsmanship and quality that goes into making each one and, unsurprisingly, most of the effort has been focussed on the cabin.

For example, the interior is trimmed as standard with Grand Black walnut veneer but buyers can instead choose from eighty eight Mulliner piano veneers created especially for the new model. And then there’s the Diamond-in-Diamond interior quilting design concept. In an embroidery process that took 18 months to develop the quilting covers the seats, door casings, rear quarter panels and tonneau cover. Each diamond contains exactly 712 stitches, and there are almost 400,000 stitches throughout the interior.

Alongside unique, hand-crafted chrome detailing Bentley has also chosen what it calls a Diamond Milled Technical finish for the centre console, which also features an exclusive Breitling for Mulliner clock. There’s also mood lighting that can provide seven different themes, and the clock bezel and air vent surrounds are finished in chrome. Additionally, the design of the clock face is used for the gauges and instrument display. Entertainment is provided by the Naim for Bentley audio system which comprises eighteen speakers and a 2200-watt, 20-channel amplifier.

Externally, the new model is distinguished from ‘lesser’ variants by a Double Diamond front grille and a new design of ten-spoke, 22-inch alloy wheel with badges that remain upright as the wheel rotates. LED welcome lamps below the door mirrors project the winged Bentley logo onto the ground.

Prices for the new model – whose keys are delivered in a handcrafted presentation box – haven’t been revealed, but if you have to ask and all that…
