The top five beaches in Britain for classic car lovers have been revealed in a joint project between Lancaster Insurance and Practical Classics Magazine.
Since 2019, Lancaster Insurance and Practical Classics magazine have been restoring a 1979 Volkswagen Type 2 Camper van in preparation for ‘Camper round the coast’ – an initiative to find Britain’s top five beaches.
They have restored the van in their workshop with partners Newton Commercial, Vintage Tyres, Heritage Parts Centre, Classic Car Stereo, CBR Classic Restorations and Classic Lodges Hotels – with the valuable assistance of Andrew Evanson, Dave Youngs and Paris Wakelen from Lancaster.
Readers of Practical Classics were asked in June to vote for their favourite UK beach. Then the top ten were published and readers were asked to vote for their favourite one out of the ten.
The favourite five were then selected for the tour:
Woolacombe Bay, Devon – September 6 at The Porthole, Marina Drive
Camber Sands, East Sussex – September 7 at Camber car park
Saltburn Beach, Cleveland – September 8 at Miniature Railway car park
Bamburgh Beach, Northumberland – September 9 at the beach car park
Hunstanton Beach, Norfolk – September 10 at Clifftop car park
Anyone is welcome at any of the beaches next week to join the Practical Classics team (including the Editor Danny Hopkins) and the Lancaster Insurance team.
They will be raising money for Prostate Cancer along the way with buckets at each venue.
On each day, the team would aim to arrive at the beach location at around 6pm with a road run included in the day’s proceedings.
As for the road runs, they anticipate a Monday road run through Exmoor, a Tuesday jaunt in the South Downs, a Wednesday blast through Mid Norfolk, a Thursday explore in the North Yorkshire Moors and finally a Friday jolly in Kielder Forest (all subject to change).
Once the ‘Camper round the coast’ is complete, the plan is to sell the restored camper through Silverstone Auctions in the sale at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, held 12-14 November 2021. All profits will be donated to Prostate Cancer UK.
