Electric Classic Roadster launched by RBW EV Classic Cars

Inspired by the MGB, this electric classic roadster is now on sale

The MGB is hugely popular amongst classic car enthusiasts, and now it’s been treated to a 21st century makeover as an electric classic Roadster thanks to RBW EV Classic Cars.

Built around a brand new British Motor Heritage body shell, the famous B-Series engine has been replaced by a patented electric drivetrain that the company says took three years to develop, working in conjunction with Continental Engineering Services and Zytek Automotive.

The electric motor is mounted at the rear while Hyperdrive Innovation’s lithium-ion battery pack sits under the bonnet, an arrangement that Managing Director, Peter Swain, says provides the MG with ideal weight distribution as well as providing the maximum amount of battery volume.

Swain said: “Our patented system (Patent p: 1906698.4) places the electric motor at the rear of the car and Hyperdrive Innovation’s lithium-ion battery technology under the bonnet, which gives perfectly balanced weight distribution. Not only does this give the driver much better handling of the car, retaining that sports car feel, but it also affords maximum battery volume to be housed.

“The RBW system has been tested and has achieved European Regulation No 100 of the Economic Commission, which confirms RBW as a recognised automotive worldwide manufacturer.

“What is even more exciting for us is that the RBW System and architecture can be installed into other body shells such as Austin Healey, Jaguar E-Type, Mini, and many more. Each car can be built to the clients’ personal specification and requirements. The opportunities are endless and therefore safeguards the future of classic motoring.”

Power output on the electric classic roadster is quoted at 70kW, giving the electrified classic a top speed of 80mph with 0-60mph in 9 seconds. That’s accompanied by a range of 160 miles, although that can be extended to 200 miles when the optional extra battery is specified. Recharging takes 8 hours from a 3kW supply.

Reflecting the car’s bespoke nature, RBW has equipped the Roadster with double wishbone suspension and coil-over dampers, while stopping is taken care of by OEM-specification discs and calipers with the system incorporating regenerative braking. The company also say that plenty of attention has been paid to refinement, with a focus on reducing the levels of noise, vibration and harshness in all driving conditions.

Inside, buyers will discover a cabin designed by trim specialists, Prototrim. Leather upholstery in a choice of five colours and electric windows are standard, while infotainment is taken care of by Pioneer’s Flagship system. Controlled via a motorised 7-inch colour touchscreen, it features satellite navigation, USB inputs and smartphone mirroring.

RBW go on to say that a fixed head GT version of the MGB will follow next year along with a second creation.

Revealed this week in pre-production form, the electric classic Roadster costs from £90,000 plus taxes and is available to order now. Orders are already being taken with a £5,000 deposit and RBW is offering Covid-safe test drives for those keen for a closer look.
