Six of the best for racing and rallying!

If you are looking for a car to race or rally, there is a huge offering coming up with Silverstone Auctions at Race Retro on Friday 24th February at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire – here are six of the best!

So many visitors to motor racing and rallying events dream of one day taking part themselves. Given some talent and ambition there are many ways to get started down that track and having a car is not a bad place to begin.

In the UK there are around 5,000 motor racing events annually and Motorsport UK issues around 30,000 Competition Licences annually, but the actual number of people competing in motorsport is closer to 100,000, as you don’t need a licence to take part in the majority of grass roots club motorsport events.

At Stoneleigh Park on Friday 24th February Silverstone Auctions Race Retro Classic and Competition Car Sale has some 49 race and rally cars on offer, enough race tested machinery to make a visit to look or to bid well worth the trip.

Among this fabulous offering of racing and rallying cars are the following six stunners:

LOT 329 – 1990 Porsche 911 (964) 3.6-Litre Widebody Race Car £100,000-£120,000

Six of the best for racing and rallying!

This is a box-fresh Porsche 911 race car that has been thoughtfully constructed in a professional workshop by a team of knowledgeable engineers. Although the intention was for this car to compete in the Porsche Club GB 911 Challenge, with the correct updates, equipment and papers if necessary, it could be eligible for many other series including, rally, sprint, hill-climb and Masters GT trophy etc.

LOT 322 – 2016 Morgan AR V6 -£45,000 – £65,000

Racing and rallying Silverstone Auctions

Only six of these powerful, bespoke Morgan Roadsters were built, with five remaining in the UK.

This particular example was bought new by its current owner in 2016 and has been enjoyed with some success at various events over the years. The vendor is particularly fastidious, and it is understood that they have spent over £50,000 on further developing and upgrading the car following its delivery from Morgan, however it remains road-legal and has been supported and generally looked after by Richard Thorne, a respected specialist in competition and fast-road Morgans. As with any competition car, it’s recommended that prospective purchasers check the validity and currency of any safety-related equipment.

LOT 321 – 1967 Lotus Elan S3 GTS – Historic Rally Car – MSA/HRVIF – £35,000 – £44,000

Silverstone Auctions

Ex-Circuit of Ireland Historic Rally-winning Elan S3GTS. A fast, agile and competitive Historic Rally car professionally constructed, up-to-date and ready to go.

The vendor purchased the Elan directly from Mark Butler in 2015 after other commitments stopped the rally car from ever being used competitively post rebuild. Since then, it has seen action in three rallies including most recently the Killarney Historic Stages in December 2022 and is reported to be fast and reliable

LOT 349 – 1968 Chevron B8 – FIA/HTP £170,000 – £210,000

Racing and Rallying Silverstone Auctions

Competitive in the right hands, this beautifully prepared B8 has current FIA/HTP papers and is potentially eligible for a host of exclusive events including Masters, Peter Auto and the Guards Trophy.

Described as absolutely race ready, on-the-button and highly competitive in the right hands, this historic racer should be eligible for many prestigious events including Masters, Peter Auto, Guards Trophy and many more, and could be raced most weekends of the season somewhere. Offered with new type 2016 HTP, an additional long-range fuel tank, Lifeline Zero 360 electric fire-system, ignition system, nose and other miscellaneous running spares.

LOT 342 – 1970 British Leyland Mini Clubman 1275GT -£22,000 – £26,000

Racing and Rallying Silverstone Auctions

Originally built in 1998 as a replica of XJB 308H, the penultimate ‘Works’ 1,275GT, and less than 5,000 miles since a total rebuild by Minisport.

This particular example is an exacting replica of the car that took part, because the owner of the original doesn’t usually attend shows. A committed rally fan, the vendor worked as an apprentice at RTS Motorway Remoulds, which entered car number one – a Ford Cortina GT– in the London-Sydney Marathon rally in 1968. His interest in long-distance rallying grew from there: “I’ve always had Minis, ever since my first car, so it was natural for me to make a replica of the only Mini to take part in the World Cup Rally.”

LOT 314 – 1964 Austin Healey Mark IIA (BJ7) – ‘Works Rally Replica’ £60,000 -£70,000

Racing and Rallying Silverstone Auctions

Developed over 18 years in homage to the legendary ‘Works’ rally cars of the early 1960s, this superbly presented, left-hand drive BJ7 has been finished with remarkable attention to detail.

From its Heritage Certificate we can see that the fabulous left-hand drive Healey 3000 BJ7 on offer here started life in late June 1963 and was ordered with wire wheels, overdrive, a heater, adjustable steering column, tonneau cover, white-wall tyres and a laminated windscreen. It was subsequently despatched to the USA on July the 22nd of that year and returned home to the UK many years later.

Around 18 years ago, the vendor decided that EBW 195B was in need of a substantial restoration and thought it would be a great idea to create an homage to the ‘Works’ cars from 1964 with a few concessions to modern motoring. The car is finally finished and the result is truly spectacular.

The Silverstone Auctions Sale will be held at the Race Retro Show on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th February at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire. You can also register to bid in person, online, on the telephone or via commission.
