Mike Brewer’s Classic Car Auctions Preview

Classic Car Auctions has around 150 vehicles in its sale on 26th March

Classic Car Auctions kicks off its first sale of 2021 this Friday so our own Mike Brewer, the Wheeler Dealer, went to Stoneleigh Park to have a sneak peek of the classic cars for sale.

After smashing 2020 with its online sales, despite all the obvious challenges, Classic Car Auctions has around 150 vehicles in its sale on 26th March, with many offered at no reserve – including part three of The Warwickshire Collection.

Once again viewing has been by one-on-one appointment only by appointed specialists so we sent Wheeler Dealer Mike Brewer to see which lots he would put a bid on…

Lot 146 – 1990 Audi Quattro 20V

This fabulous early-nineties Quattro 20V has just over 48,300 miles. After being cocooned for 15 years, it has now been fully recommissioned with a cambelt change and starts on the button. Presented in the rare Lago Blue with grey cloth and leather interior, and still sporting its original dealer plates and rear window sticker, this is a great low-mileage model.

Estimate: £50,000 – £55,000 plus premium

Lot 165 – 1967 Bedford CA Dormobile

This great family vehicle has everything – including the kitchen sink! Presented in period Peppermint Green and Cream with a biscuit interior, this camper has had a full-colour change and respray inside and out. It underwent a full engine rebuild in 2016/17 and despite not being used for a couple of years, still runs and was recently serviced. It may require some light recommissioning.

Estimate: £8,000 – £10,000 plus premium

Lot 141 – 1963 Mercedes-Benz 230SL (W113)

This impressively restored 230SL Pagoda, absolutely fresh for summer, has a manual gearbox. Presented in Horizon Blue (304) with a Dark Blue interior and matching hood, a substantial £45,000 has been spent over the past 15 years to bring it to its present condition. Photo-documented bodywork restoration by Steve Burns of Princes Risborough and engine refurbished by noted Mercedes-Benz specialist, Chris Grey. It has also had £8,000 spent with Silchester Garage on a full axle refurbishment and new rear springs.

Estimate: £45,000 – £55,000 plus premium

Lot 129 – 1983 Porsche 911 3.0 SC Cabriolet

This lovely 3-litre SC Cabriolet, in a rare colour, is a great opportunity to enter the Porsche market. Number 1217 of only 2,406 Euro-spec models before Porsche changed to the 3.2-litre, this model has 3-litre 215bhp, fuel-injected, flat-6. 5-speed manual box, it does 0-60 in six seconds and a top speed of 160mph. Maintained by Glocklers of Frankfurt for its first 140,000 km and subsequently owned by Porsche specialist, Brian Woodward of Rockhampton, in 1999.

Estimate: £25,000 – £30,000 plus premium

Lot 201-240 – The Warwickshire Collection

The Warwickshire Collection offers every Jaguar model under the sun in all different states of repair. The models vary and include some rare offerings so make sure to have a good look through if you’re in the market for a Jag. In recent years these cars have formed part of a larger collection and as such have received little or no use. An element of recommissioning is to be expected to return them to the road once again.

Estimate: All vehicles offered No Reserve

Lot 104 – 1957 Lagonda 3 Litre Mk2 4-Door Saloon
Lot 103 – 1994 MG RV8
Lot 102 – 1985 Rover SD1 3.5 V8 Vanden Plas Auto

These vehicles are just three of the cars Mike spotted that are offered with No Reserve. The Lagonda has been dry-stored and unused for approximately 25 years, and is presented in barn find condition.

The MG RV8 drives and handles beautifully, with a recent MoT showing no advisories. It’s still quick too at a top speed of 135 mph and 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds. It is also being sold with the registration number L20 MGB.

The Rover is finished in Pendelican Maroon with contrasting interior. The engine has been uprated to a 3.9 V8 with brakes, handling and exhaust all adjusted to suit. This is an increasingly collectable top of the range Series 2.

Estimate: No Reserve

Silverstone Auctions’ Race Retro Online Sale takes place on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th March. In amongst the exceptional line-up of competition and classic cars was this slice of American muscle that is well known to the team at Mike Brewer Motoring so we wanted to make sure you didn’t miss it…

Lot 434 – 1970 Dodge Charger 500

Since arriving in the UK in 2004, this car has been spectacularly restored. After being stripped to bare metal, the car has been painted in the correct Light Green Metallic with factory Dark Green Metallic below the doors. The full vinyl roof has been replaced in the correct colour and the interior has been totally retrimmed in the correct green vinyl with matching seatbelts and a new headlining.

Pleasingly, the black vinyl dashboard appears to be original and certainly the instruments and radio date from 1970. The presentation of the engine bay is show quality.

A couple of sensible upgrades have been made, the most dramatic of which was the installation of a freshly built ‘Magnum’ 440ci (7.2-litre) engine generating over 500bhp. With the much bigger numbers from the Magnum, it made sense to convert the front brakes to discs. Since completion, apart from a couple of shake-down runs and a bit of setting-up, it hasn’t travelled any distance.

Estimate: £55,000 – £65,000 plus premium

Bidding is all online or by phone – or you can make a commission bid. You need to register in advance of the sale to be allowed to bid.
