Doherty’s Green Goddess heads to NEC Classic

See the restoration and meet the team at NEC Classic Motor Show, 12-14 November.

The freshly restored ‘Green Goddess’ as seen in the new show Jimmy Doherty’s Dream Builds On Wheels will be on display at this year’s Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show.

Over eight episodes, farmer and television presenter, Jimmy Doherty, has built the ultimate home on wheels so his family can explore the British countryside, from a ‘Green Goddess’ fire engine.

Jimmy Doherty’s Dream Builds on Wheels follows Jimmy and ace engineer Jimmy de Ville – the star of Goblin Works Garage – as they meet people building their very own camper vans, providing inspiration for a brilliant project of their own. Let’s just say that some of the plans were very ambitious…

The Jimmy’s Farm star said: “I had no idea there’s this whole world of people doing up random vehicles into campervans. I was at a farm in Scotland speaking to a barn manager, and she was telling me how she no longer has horses, but she’s got an old horse box she’s doing up.

“Some of the vehicles out there are phenomenal. Army trucks, old ambulances, four by fours… There was one van that had a fairy house on the back, like ‘Gandalf’s getaway’, and an old army ambulance that was like a posh London gentleman’s club — all mahogany and red leather.”

For their own build, the pair chose a Bedford Green Goddess that had entered service with the Irish Auxiliary Fire Service in the early 1950s. Apart from the fact that it was yellow and not green, it was a clear that a major restoration lay ahead and the work of transforming this historic vehicle into something perfect for a family holiday would take four months.

Viewers watched as the duo used all of their skills to bring the historic military vehicle back to life, and without giving away any spoilers, visitors to the show will be amazed by the transformation. It’s no wonder that Jimmy Doherty’s family was thrilled with the result and looking forward to some great holiday adventures.

Jimmy Doherty will be sharing the story on the Discovery+ Live Stage on Sunday while Jimmy De Ville will be on hand throughout the show from 12-14 November to explain more about the restoration.

Jimmy Doherty’s Dream Builds On Wheels airs on Quest on Tuesdays at 9.00pm, and all episodes are available to stream now on discovery+.

The Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, with Discovery, will be held at Birmingham’s NEC from Friday 12 to Sunday 14 November 2021.
